About Sprout Farms Apple Orchards

Sprout Farms was established in 1980 as a small, family-run nursery specializing in growing fruit trees for northern climates. We grew from a small, weekend business to shipping trees to every province in Canada. The nursery business was disbanded in 2004 as the family grew older and the members went in different directions. The decision was made to turn out existing demonstration orchard into a U-Pick and to plant out our remaining stock to establish new orchards. We now have approximately 700 trees in the ground. 2017 sees another change as we move away from the U-Pick model to Community Shared Agriculture and pre-picked fruit sales.

The farm continued to evolve with the addition of sheep. We were initially given two sheep of unknown breed, which has grown into a flock of 30 with the addition of purebred Jacob, Scottish Blackface, Southdown Babydoll and Shetland sheep. We now have purebred and some interesting crosses of these breeds that have been producing lovely fleeces sought after by spinners and weavers. The primary use of our sheep friends is to mow grass on our farm in an environmentally sustainable manner.

We began to grow a limited number of trees again in 2010 when Julie and Joachim expressed an interest in learning the art of fruit tree growing. Under Amanda’s tutelage, they have successfully grown five tree crops. We have a great selection of apple trees available in 2018.

In 2013 we also added bees to the farm to aid in pollination and produce delicious honey. Ava, Amanda’s daughter in law, took over bee care in 2015.

Amanda has always been pleased to share her knowledge and has taught many workshops throughout Alberta about many aspects of fruit growing and tree care. Check our workshop page for upcoming courses.

The farm will continue to evolve, and we look forward to sharing our new directions with you.

Our Team:

Amanda – Founder of Sprout Farms. Amanda has 38 years of fruit tree growing experience, is an ISA Certified Arborist and a Journeyman Landscape Gardener and operates Tree Sense, a tree care business along with running the orchard. Amanda enjoys educating the public about trees and fruit for over 30 years and now wants to focus on educating people about the importance of trees, plants, and working in a sustainable environment.

Joachim and Julie started out as clients of Sprout Farms and have developed their yard in Edmonton into an urban orchard. They are tireless promoters of fruit growing and sustainable growing and over the last 6 years have become experienced tree growers.

Ava made the move to the farm in 2013 when she married Amanda’s son Ivan. Ava has adapted well to farm life and has taken over Bee Care, animal care and general farm chores.

Ivan grew up on the farm and now runs his own business but helps with farm chores when he has time. He has become our go to guy when we need help with building projects and repairs.
