CSA Fruit Shares Are NOW AVAILABLE!
Farming in any form can be challenging at times in Alberta. With tree fruit crops, the combination of weather, such as heavy frosts at the wrong time, fluctuating temperatures and wind can greatly affect the productivity of our trees. These weather challenges make it difficult for us to maintain a steady income without working off the farm. It is challenging for us to maintain the orchard while working off the farm.
Community shared agriculture allows us and our CSA partners to share in the bounty and the pit falls of growing fruit crops in Alberta. With the payment made at the beginning of the season, it puts money in the bank to help cover production costs. This allows us to spend more time on production and grow a better crop for you.
The other art of CSAs is that the clients share in the risk; sometimes there will be bountiful crops and sometimes complete failures. Clients will receive fruit shares that reflect the crop that is available in any one season and will have priority over our farm gate sales.
Not only do the clients receive delicious, locally grown, pesticide free and sustainably grown fruit, you will have opportunities to help in the production of the crop, enjoy our orchards and build a community with likeminded people. We will have maintenance work bees on Saturdays throughout the season and you will be invited to assist in harvesting the crop prior to delivery dates. Shareholders will receive information on these dates when they sign up.
Shareholders will receive a fruit box once per week for 11 weeks, approximately July 15th to October 7th. The shares will be available in two sizes. Small shares are suitable for a couple or a young family, and large shares are suitable for a family of four. The actual amount of fruit will vary depending on the crop and what is ready at the time. Last year, our shares contained primarily apples but also plums, pears, fresh pressed unpasteurized apple cider when available, recipes and other delights. This year, by extending the season from 7 weeks to 11 weeks, we will be also offering sour cherries, saskatoons and raspberries. All fruits will be labeled as to cultivar and the box will contain an assortment of cultivars that are in season.
This season we will have two pickup locations, one on the north side and one on the south side of Edmonton. They will be near the Henday for easy access. Depending on the number of shareholders, we may split the south site into two sites, one in the south east and one in the south west. The actual sites will be given to you in your welcome letter. We will be on-site when you pick up your fruit share. This will provide you the opportunity to exchange some fruit or purchase extra fruit if extra fruit is available. This system will allow us to manage more perishable items, such as fresh cider, better. There will also be a pickup day at the farm.
We will only sell 100 fruit shares per season, so get your name in early!
Prices are for the whole season.
